Nigeria: WAAPP Seeks Restructuring of Agric Research Councils

The West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) Nigeria has said that stakeholders in the agricultural sector will soon put together a bill aimed at restructuring the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN).

National Project Coordinator WAAPP Nigeria, Prof. Damian O. Chikwendu, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, said the objective is to suggest ways of transforming ARCN into a more efficient and functional body capable of driving agricultural development in Nigeria.

He said ARCN was established in 2006 with the mandate of coordinating, supervising and regulating agricultural research, training and extension in the fifteen National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) and eleven Federal Colleges of Agriculture.

Chikwendu said while ARCN has implemented some initiatives aimed at revitalizing and refocusing the research system, it has recognized that the existing structure and organization is not wholly effective at responding to government's demands for cost-effective management, generation of appropriate technologies, agricultural growth and the individual needs of the rural poor.
